“Defiance” by A.L. Sowards

This book was released at the beginning of the month and is a fictitious story of german born Lukas as he fights in WWII for the USA and is captured in the war.

Part 1 begins in the summer of 1944 in Virginia. Part 2 begins at chapter 8 and is also in the year of 1944. Part 3 takes place in Germany during 1944-1945 at the beginning of chapter 18. and finally chapter 31 begins part 4 in the spring of 1945.

I gave this book to my 15 year old son to read for book review since he loves reading historical and war fiction books. This is his review:

Lukas was a German born American who fought right out of high school in WWII. He was on the front lines facing Germany when his company gets overrun. He is uncertain he will survive in a POW (prisoner of war) camp but you’ll need to read the book to find out.

This is one book that never had a dull moment and was extremely hard to put down. It is one of the best books I have read and I would recommend it to people who are history fanatics.

I received a copy of this book complimentary for blog and social media review. All opinions are my own.

About the book
Eight years after immigrating to the United States, German-born Lukas Ley embodies the American dream: successful athlete, gorgeous girlfriend, loving family. But beneath the surface, eighteen-year-old Lukas is driven by ambition, resolved to avenge the murder of his father at the hands of the Nazi regime. Unfortunately, a failed physical throws his plans for flight school off course. Unlike his war-hero older brother, Lukas’s purpose is unclear. He can’t fly, and in the eyes of the military, he’s good for only one thing—the front lines.
From the foxholes of war-ravaged Luxembourg to the devastation of an enormous German offensive, Lukas’s journey is fraught with peril. But when he’s taken as a prisoner of war, he realizes life is about to get much worse. In the enemy camp, Lukas is viewed as a German fighting for the wrong side. Ripped from the innocence of an idealistic youth, he becomes a man beaten by the horrors of war. Now his only hope of survival is to hold tightly to his faith in God and his love of family and home. But even if he manages to make it out alive, can he ever be whole again?

The Color Run recap 2016 #thecolorrun #Tropicolor #Roanoke

I post alot of pictures and videos on my Instagram page, but I forget to do my actual recaps here on my blog, so here’s my recap from The Color Run-Tropicolor tour in Roanoke, VA.

Last spring my 2 boys and I did The Color Run 5k race together. This is my 4th or 5th year doing it and I really enjoy walking/running them with my family. They are alot of fun and very organized.

The Color Run always has a different theme and last year was Tropicolor so I went to the store and got us all Hawaiian flower necklaces to wear.

If you’ve never done a Color Run before-here are some of my suggestions:

1. Even though its a “fun” race and not timed, treat it like a race. Meaning I would suggest getting out and walking or exercising on a regular basis before doing The Color Run. You will be walking or running for 3.1 miles which will feel like alot if you’re not use to regular workouts or walking.

2. Bring towels and wet hand or body wipes to wipe yourself down after the race. You will most likely have alot of color on you, but it washes off very easily.

3. Like I just said, the color will wash off very easily so don’t worry about ruining your clothes or shoes. Just hose them down with water afterwards and throw them in the washer-good as new!

4. Wear sunglasses and/or bandanna for your face. My son and I hate getting color up our nose and in our eyes so we always bring these items with us.

10 day Countdown to Foot Levelers 2017 Blue Ridge Marathon #BRM26pt2 #RunBlueRidge #10k

Join me for the 8th annual America’s Toughest Road Marathon on April 22, 2017! Did you know that Roanoke, VA, is one of the few running races allowed on the Blue Ridge Parkway in the country (America’s most visited National Park)?

The Blue Ridge Marathon has THE MOST elevation change of any road race in the United States. This is how it gets it’s “toughest” road marathon status.

artm-seal2014-1

You don’t have to run a marathon though to participate! They are offering FOUR distances for this race: 10k, half, full, & double. I will be running the 10k. New to this year is also the RELAY!!

For this post I want to highlight the FOUR PERSON MARATHON RELAY specifics.

RUN THIS EXCLUSIVE MARATHON COURSE, WITHOUT THE WHOLE 26.2 THING…

April 22, 2017

Brand new for 2017 we are introducing a new FOUR PERSON RELAY course that allows teams to tackle America’s Toughest Road Marathon together. The course is broken up into manageable sections that are accessible to all runners who are interested in an elevation challenge without the extra mileage. For this inaugural year, we will be allowing 14 teams of four people to participate (56 total racers) in the relay with hopes to build on future years. Once your team is registered for the relay, there will be NO CHANGES to team members. If a team member must drop out, the switch will have to be made at the Friday Race Expo registration table and a $10/runner charge will be applied.

Below are general descriptions of each leg of the race including approximate mileage. A relay map and exact details will be released and sent to runners prior to race day:

RUNNER #1: Mill Mountain Leg

Total mileage for runner #1 is ~6.2 miles. #1 will line up with all the other racers at the starting line, and begin when the gun goes off at 7:35am. Runner #1 proceeds up Mill Mountain 2.7 miles to the “spur” (where the road splits and you can go left to the Blue Ridge Parkway or right to the Mill Mtn. Star). Runner #1 will actually be completing two separate sections, and will wait at the spur while runner #2 runs the Roanoke Mountain Loop. We will have a tent set up by the Mill Mtn. Spur aid station and runner #2 can bring a bag with clothing and other supplies to leave in the tent for your use. Once Runner #2 returns from their 9.2 mile section on the parkway, they will “pass the baton” back to Runner #1 who will then run their remaining 3.5 miles up the rest of Mill Mountain to the star and then down the back side of the mountain on the old toll road until they reach the Fleet Feet sports aid station where runner #3 will be waiting.
Runner #1 must complete their first leg by 8:20am (~16:20 minute mile pace), and their second leg by 11:45am.

RUNNER #2: Roanoke Mountain Leg

The total mileage for runner #2 is ~9.1 miles. This runner is responsible for the “beast” leg of the route, which is the longest and arguably toughest section of the course. Runner #2 will run the entire Roanoke Mountain loop along the Blue Ridge Parkway, reaching the highest elevation peak along the course. All runners participating in the relay must take the shuttle to the appropriate transition area, relay runners not on the shuttle will be disqualified. The runner #2 shuttle will depart from Williamson at 6:30am, runners will be taken up to the Mill Mtn. Spur transition point. They can take a duffle with supplies for themselves and runner #1.
Runner #2 must be finished with their leg by 10:50am in accordance with the 6 hour cut off at mile 22 (~16:20 minute mile pace).

RUNNER #3: Peakwood Mountain Leg

Total mileage for runner #3 is ~6.1 miles. This runner will run the loop through South Roanoke with the added bonus of running up and down the notoriously steep Peakwood Mountain. This runner will start and end near River’s Edge Sports Complex where there will be a support tent set up next to the Fleet Feet Sports Roanoke aid station. All runners participating in the relay must take the shuttle to the appropriate aid station tents, relay runners not on the shuttle will be disqualified. The runner #3 shuttle will depart from Williamson at 7:50am, runners will be taken to the transition area near River’s Edge. This means you can cheer on your teammates at the start before heading over to meet the shuttle. You may also take a duffle with supplies for yourself, runner #1.
Runner #3 must complete their leg by 1:25pm (~16:20 minute mile pace).

RUNNER #4: South Roanoke to Downtown Leg

Total mileage for runner #4 is ~4.8 miles. This runner gets to have all the glory of crossing the finish line, as well as having the shortest leg of the route through downtown Roanoke. While their section is certainly not flat, they will not summit any of the three mountains along the course. Runner #4 will also be dropped at the support tent next to the Fleet Feet Sports Aid Station, and once runner #3 departs will need to be prepared to head over to the final transition area on Jefferson St. (just a short walk from the support tent). All runners participating in the relay must take the shuttle to the appropriate aid station tents, relay runners not on the shuttle will be disqualified. The runner #4 shuttle will depart from Williamson at 8:50am, runners will be taken to the transition area near River’s Edge. This means you can cheer on your teammates at the start before heading over to meet the shuttle. You may take a duffle with pre-running supplies and leave it with runners #1 & #3 to bring back for you on the bus.
Runner #4 must reach the 6 hour cut off point at mile 22 (~16:20 minute mile pace).

MARATHON RELAY COURSE DESCRIPTION & MAPS

“Deadly Inheritance” by Clair M. Poulson *christian mystery book review*

“Deadly Inheritance” by Clair M. Poulson

Another thrilling mystery book by author Clair Poulson! I have read some of his books off and on over the years and have really enjoyed them.

I really liked the main characters Andi, Bolden, Mason, and Gramps in this story. It was nice to see how Andi and Bolden were able to pull their life around after having such an awful childhood and relationship with their mother.

Andi decides to settle down in a small town after meeting Gramps in the local cafe one day. Years later she finds contentment but not the peace she is hoping to find. After former cop Gramps Granger is murdered, Andi and her brother try to figure out the killer is and why someone is trying to hurt them as well.

Fast paced, clean, christian mystery that is sure to keep you guessing and on the edge of your seat! I received a copy of this book complimentary for blog and social media review. All opinions are my own.

About the Book
Andi Buckner and her twin brother, Bolden, have had enough of the rough streets of Detroit. When they can no longer bear the drugs and abuse within their home, the twins make their escape: Bolden to the military, and Andy to wherever the wind takes her. With few belongings and no specific destination, Andi eventually finds herself across the table from a kind old man in a quaint café in Spring Hollow, Montana. Louis “Gramps” Granger, a retired cop, takes Andi under his wing. Andi soon finds a peace she’s never known as she roots herself in the small town, working at the café and living in a cabin on Gramp’s property. But her peace is short-lived. . . When an enemy from Gramp’s past murders the old man, Andi’s need to see justice served draws her into an investigation far beyond her own abilities. But hundreds of miles away, her twin brother senses her despair and heeds her silent plea for help. Andi is soon reunited with her brother as well as with Bolden’s friend, private investigator Mason Crowther. Together, the trio delves into a mystery and soon discovers that the murderer’s motive goes far deeper than any of them imagined. With the truth almost within reach, they find themselves directly in the path of a killer who will stop at nothing to finish what they’ve started. . . .
