“No One Ever Asked” by Katie Ganshert
This book is completely different from what I normally read, but as soon as I started reading it I was hooked! The author shares that the book is based off actual events of school segregation, school violence and shootings; so although this is a clean christian fiction books, it deals with adult content.

The chapters alternate between the views of 3 very different women-but all 3 of these women interact with each other and are all part of the same school district. The book is divided up into a couple of parts and is fairly long-over 350 pages! In chapter 1 there is a tragic event that happens and then the rest of the book takes the reader back 10-12 months leading up to the tragic event.

There were several times I gasped, laughed, cried and felt the same emotions as Jen, Anaya or Camille. I enjoyed reading about the real life struggles of all these women-poverty, race, divorce, medical issues, parenting…these are alot of issues that many families face on a regular basis. It was a great book and I enjoyed reading it from beginning to end!

MY REVIEW:

I read the first book in the Northbrook Hockey Elite series and really enjoyed it (even though I know nothing about hockey!) and I liked getting to know the team. Clint from book 1 (Faceoff) is mentioned as well.

“Powerplay” focuses on Jax and Meg. Meg and Jax seem to hit it off when they are literally thrown together in the first chapter of the book. Jax struggles throughout the book with feeling successful in his hockey career, feeling good enough for his family (specifically his father) and finding the right woman in his life that just doesn’t want his money. Meg is a pretty business woman who is kind and knows what she wants from life. She takes care of her Gramma and spends time with her friends and suddenly finds herself friends with the famous Jax.

I liked how their relationship and friendship grew during the story, and how they both were quick to help others-not thinking of themselves. Interesting plot, great characters, steady pace and funny.

Clean romance but does include some steamy kiss scenes and a couple swear words throughout the book. I can’t wait to read more from this series!

My Review: 

This was a beautiful, heart warming, heart wrenching story! I absolutly loved it! I read it from cover to cover enjoying every minute of Jericho (Rico) and Anamarie’s story and how they both ended up helping Dusty. The emotions of gaining and losing a child were very real and raw in this story.

The emotions of foster care and not feeling like a part of the family were a big struggle that Rico had to overcome in this story in order to move towards the future. I also liked seeing Ana stand up to her family and start to live her own life and dreams. I loved reading about the town and how they all helped each other, especially during a time of need.

I can’t wait to read the next book in this family series and hope Rico and Anamarie will be mentioned so I can read more about their relationship.

“So you’ll be busy.”

“Not so busy that I can’t take care of Dusty.” Why wasn’t he asking her to marry him? They loved each other, didn’t they?

“Well, then.” He placed his hands on his knees. “I guess we should get married. We can go to the courthouse or Wyatt can marry us.”

In all the years she dreamed about someone asking her to marry them, it wasn’t like this. She stood up, anger in every part of her body. “I’m not getting married at the courthouse or by Wyatt Carson.”

“Why not?” He was genuinely puzzled and that eased the anger inside her.

“Ever since I was a little girl I dreamed of walking down the aisle on my dad’s arm in a white dress. My sisters and I used to play Bride. We’d walk down the hall with a pillowcase over our heads holding some fake flowers of our mom’s. Sometimes Bubba played dad. I want to get married in the church.”

He frowned. “Anamarie, I’m not into big weddings.”

“It would be just my family and your family.”

“I don’t have a family.”

“Excuse me. Who are the Rebels?”

“They’re my employers.”

He was putting up walls and she had to go at this another way. “Where do you spend your holidays?”

“At Miss Kate’s and on Christmas morning I go to Egan’s first and then to Miss Kate’s.”

“Really? I don’t know many people who go to their employers’ house on Christmas.”

“They’re good to me, but we’re not blood.”

“And that matters to you? Because I don’t see it mattering to the Rebels.” Why was it so hard for him to admit that he was a part of the Rebel family? The walls he had built around himself were getting thicker and she didn’t know if she could get through to make him understand how much she loved him and how much the Rebels loved him.

She sat on the coffee table again, giving him a few minutes. As the clock ticked away, he said nothing. She finally asked, “What are you going to do about Dusty?”

“I can’t let him go into foster care.”

“Then do something about it.”

After a moment, he said, “Okay, I guess we’ll do the wedding thing you want.” His voice held a tinge of resentment that didn’t sit well with her.

She got up from the coffee table. “I’m going to pack my things, but I won’t leave until the morning. I want to say goodbye to Dusty.”

“What? Wait?” As she walked by his chair, he caught her hand. “What are you talking about?”

“I don’t want to feel as if I’m forcing you into marriage. It has to be something you want, too, and clearly you don’t.”

“I’m just trying to get this right.”

“Well, you got it wrong.” She took a deep breath. “Rico, when a man proposes to a woman, she wants to hear more than we should get married. I need more if I’m going to spend my life with you. And you seem very hesitant to offer that.”

“What do you mean? You know I love you. I’ve been crazy about you for years.”

The magic words would have been wonderful if he hadn’t tacked on you know.

She placed her hand over her heart. “I love you, Rico, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you.”

He got to his feet, still holding her hand. “The only person I’ve ever loved is my great-grandmother and it’s hard for me to recognize those emotions after everything that has happened to me. But I know that I love you. I love you more than I’ve loved anyone in my whole life. Will you marry me and help me make a home for Dusty?”

MY REVIEW:

This was a novella (short story) from the author’s “Wedding Collection” series but if you haven’t read any of her books, this can be read as a stand alone book. I love that this was a short, feel good holiday story-perfect for when you need a reading break but don’t have alot of time to invest with reading a long book.

I liked JoJo and reading about all her job around town and how she helps others. I also liked that the author recaped the “magic” of the famous Wedding Dress and the history behind it.

The chapters alternated between JoJo and her childhood friend-singer Buck who comes back to town to visit for the holidays.

This was a great holiday story about friendship, love, and healing with a small town feel. I really enjoyed reading it! I received a copy of this book complimentary for blog and social media review. All opinions are my own.
