“The White City” review & giveaway!

MY REVIEW:
I really didn’t know what to expect with reading this book. I found it to be a good mixture of intrigue, romance, Christian fiction, and historical true crime-all wrapped into one story.

Winnifred, the daughter of a Chicago Police Inspector, sees a woman kidnapped at the local Chicago World Fair and immediately wants to investigate. However, her father and his colleagues don’t believe her because she’s known for her love of novels and is dismissed. She convinces her father to allow her to go undercover to get to know the Doctor who she suspects is the kidnapper of the woman. Together with Police office Jude, they try to uncover what’s really happening in their area.

I loved Winnifred’s character-lots of spunk and determination. There were other elements to the story besides trying to find out who the kidnapper was… Jude trying to find his brothers killer. Winnifred trying to find a husband among suitors. Both of them trying not to get killed…

Although this isn’t my usual genre of books that I read, I found it fascinating and was shocked to learn that the story was based on an actual serial killer from the late 1890s!

I received a copy of this book complimentary for blog and social media review. All opinions are my own.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

robin patchen

Aside from her family and her Savior, Robin Patchen has two loves—writing and traveling. If she could combine them, she’d spend a lot of time sitting in front of her laptop at sidewalk cafes and ski lodges and beachside burger joints. She’d visit every place in the entire world—twice, if possible—and craft stories and tell people about her Savior. Alas, time is too short and money is too scarce for Patchen to traipse all over the globe, even if her husband and kids wanted to go with her. So she stays in Oklahoma, shares the Good News when she can, and writes to illustrate the unending grace of God through the power and magic of story.

“Justice Mission” (True Blue K-9 Unit) by Lynette Eason

Justice Mission (True Blue K-9 Unit) by Lynette Eason

This book is the start to the True Blue k-9 unit series and it’s off to an amazing start! I can’t not wait until more books are released in this Harlequin Suspense series!

I loved this story and all the characters. Readers are introduced early on to the entire Jameson family when Sophie’s boss, Chief Jameson goes missing. Non-stop action, drama, heartbreak, and some romance throughout this clean suspense story. I was on the edge of my seat and read the book in one night because I didn’t want to stop reading.

I have read and loved all of Lynette Eason books and I can’t wait to read more books by other authors in this new series featuring canine heros. I enjoyed reading about the k-9 dog protection element of the story and the training and interesting things the police dogs can do.

I purchased my own copy of this book for blog and social media review. All opinions are my own.

About the Book:

With Sophie’s boss missing and someone determined to silence her, NYPD officer Luke Hathaway vows he and his K-9 partner will guard her. But he must keep an emotional distance to ensure this mission ends in justice…not cold-blooded murder.

LewisGale #SalemVAHalf & VA #LewisGale8k race recap for 2018 #virginiablueridge

I participated this past October, for the 3rd time, the Salem VA half marathon and 8k race series. I was selected as a race ambassador which meant I received my race entry complimentary so I could share my training, race recap, honest opinions and share a special discount code with my readers.

This is one of my favorite races every year and I plan on participating again this year. An 8k distance isn’t very common so I love that they offer it, instead of the usual 5k length option. I love the rolling hills and scenic views of downtown Salem. It’s absolutely beautiful!

This year my husband and my 8 year old joined me. This was my sons longest race and he did AMAZING! I thought for sure he would get a medal for his age group, but he did not-he was really close though!

Did you see the amazing medals they offered this year as well? They really took a step up this year with their shirts and medals!

Packet pickup was downtown salem at the farmers market. It was quick and easy getting my race packet-they were very efficient!

My race experience this year was great as always…they start on time, mark the roads very clearly for the half marathon and 8k distances, friendly volunteers, LOVE the chick fil a sandwich at the finish line, awesome medals, and a recovery stretching station which I always take advantage of!

If you are wanting a challenge from the usual 5k local races, I would highly encourage you to walk or run the Salem 8k race this year!

Here are some more of my pictures from my race this past October:

For info on the upcoming race this October 12th, 2019: you can visit here: http://www.salemhalfmarathon.com/

30 days until #RunBlueRidge #brm26pt2 race day & how I’m training

It’s 30 days until RACE DAY! Are you excited? I know I am!

Last Saturday I went up Mill Mountain with 2 of my girlfriends to practice for race day. We had no expectations for speed or time-we just wanted to go thru the motions of going up and back down the mountain.

It was SOOOOO cold! I am not use to training in 30 degree weather with snow on the ground. Unfortunately there was ice, snow and leaves going back DOWN the mountain (the back way, service road) so we had to walk slowly instead of running down like we usually do.

We finished in 2 hours which is what I had expected honestly. On race day I typically finish the 10k in 1.5 hours.

For food fuel (before and during):
✨nuun energy tablet with water (before)
✨GF rice cakes with PB and banana (before)
✨large water bottle with nuun hydration tablet (during)
✨honey stinger glutenfree waffle (right before)
✨honey stinger energy chews (during)
…lots of energy and no soreness! It really makes a difference when I eat and hydrate properly!

How is your training going? Are you having weird weather like we are in VA? I’m hoping to get outside more for training so crossing my fingers it gets warmer.
