“A Lady in Attendance” by Rachel Fordham

This was such a fascinating historical fiction book set in the late 1890s. I have read other historical fiction books by this author and continue to be impressed with her characters and storylines.

As I got to know the main character Hazel throughout, I was intrigued by her story, how and why she became incarcerated, and her big transformation. Unfortunately there are people from her past who keep appearing in this story who don’t believe she’s changed after 5 years.

It was heartbreaking to read about her and her family’s trials and how one persons mistakes and having bad friends can change the future. Fortunately Hazel decided to turn her life around and I liked how she sought to make amends and to become independent with working and being an upstanding citizen. I liked reading about her interactions with the doctor and their patients. Dr. Gilbert was a great character and I loved how kind, non judgmental and forgiving he was.

I really enjoyed this story and can’t wait to read future books by this author. I don’t read alot of historical fiction because sometimes they can be a little boring, but NOT this one! I read it cover to cover within a day.

I received a copy of this book complimentary for blog and social media review. All opinions are my own.

About the Book:
Five years in a New York state reformatory have left a blemish on Hazel’s real name. So when she takes a job as Doctor Gilbert Watts’s lady in attendance in 1898, she does so under an alias. In the presence of her quiet and pious employer, Hazel finds more than an income. She finds a friend and a hope that if she can set her tarnished past in order, she might have a future after all.

As Gilbert becomes accustomed to the pleasant chatter of his new dental assistant, he can’t help but sense something secretive about her. Perhaps there is more to this woman than meets the eye. Can the questions that loom between them ever be answered? Or will the deeds of days gone by forever rob the future of its possibilities?

Rachel Fordham pens a tender tale of a soft-spoken man, a hardened woman, and the friends that stand by them as they work toward a common purpose–to expunge the record of someone society deemed beyond saving–and perhaps find love along the way.

“Her Rodeo Rancher” (The Montgomerys of Spirit Lake Book 2) by M. K. Stelmack

Although this is the second book in this series, it can be read as a standalone book.

Fake dating, spa, ranchers, sabotage, horses…what more could you want?! This story has lots of hilarious and sweet moments as opposites Will and Krista make a go of a “relationship” for the sake of their businesses.

I really enjoyed the flow of the plot and the characters. Clean romance. This was a new to me author and I’m glad I tried it out.

“Nora and the Sacred Stones” by Laura Hatch Rupper

My 11 year old son just read this book and said he enjoyed it. It was quick for him to read (100 pages in length) so he read it in one afternoon. He liked the main characters and the mystical magical plot. He said he hopes there will be more books by this author.

We would recommend this fantasy novella (short story) to middle school and early high school readers. I received a copy of this book complimentary for blog and social media review. All opinions are my own.

About the Book:
Trespasser, Thief, Assailant—these were never titles Nora planned on. She was just trying to protect her sister. With the help of her little brother and his best friend, Nora embarks on a life-or-death quest that could rock the very fabric of their society.

MY REVIEW

I don’t typically read Amish fiction anymore but decided to try this one out since I think I have read other books by this author. This author has written other Amish Country Justice romances, but they are all individual stories so you do not have to read them in any particular order.

I really enjoyed getting to know Lilah and Levi and their quest to discover what Lilah’s brother was hiding before his death. This story had lots of twists and turns with an unexpected finish.

I was highly surprised that I enjoyed this book and story alot more than I thought. I have two other Amish country justice books by this author that I have never read, that I plan on reading now since I enjoyed this one so much.

Clean Amish Christian with a little bit of romance. Non-graphic violence. Great suspense and drama.

I received a copy of this book complimentary for blog and social media review. All opinions are my own.

Time travel Medieval adventure set in Ireland. Clean adventure and romance. Magic and intrigue. If you like time travel books than you will enjoy this one! I appreciated getting to know this new to me author even though I don’t usually read or like time travel books.

About the Book:
After a rough stint at work in the ER, Dillon Kelly is more than a little ready for a vacation when he packs his bags and sets off on a camping trip in the wilds of Ireland. But when a mysterious dagger covered in druidic markings appears in his backpack, Dillon finds himself hurtled into the fourteenth century. Thrust into the legends and politics of ancient Ireland, he is rescued from suspicious locals by a beautiful young woman named Ailish. Ailish has always dreamed of being a bard, but there’s just one problem: women aren’t allowed. Determined to follow her heart, Ailish has fooled everyone into thinking she’s a boy—everyone, that is, except for Dillon. He’s agreed to keep her secret in exchange for her help in finding his way home to his own time. Despite the impossible barriers between them, feelings beyond friendship soon blossom. But more than just their budding romance is in danger. “Margot Hovley grew up a country kid in Washington State, where she filled the tedious hours of farm chores with an overactive imagination. She loves her work with her church’s international magazines, but fiction writing is her favorite creative outlet. Time’s Dagger is her third published full-length novel. She lives in northern Utah at the foot of her beloved mountains, where she chases chickens and grandchildren and teaches piano to the somewhat willing. Helping run the family business is hectic, but she loves working with her husband, Art, and several of the Hovley children. How she finds time for writing is both a miracle and a mystery.
